CALL TO ORDER

            The meeting was called to order at 1:30 PM by President Mike Trainer.

OPENING CEREMONIES

            The invocation was led by Deacon Jerry Whitley.  Sergeant at Arms, Bill Lambrides, lead the members in reciting the pledge of allegiance to the flag of the United States and also the pledge of allegiance to the flag of Texas.

            There was no speaker for the month of January.

REPORTS of OFFICERS

Presidents Report

          President Trainer reported that he had been appointed to the Board of Texas for Secure Retirement.  The objective of this board is to preserve defined pension plans.

          President Trainer announced that as of today, “all committees are null and void.”  He asked for volunteers that wanted to serve on any of the Association’s committees.  He distributed forms to all the members.  He asked that they provide

their names and what committees they would like to serve on.  He requested that the forms be returned no later than the February meeting. Once the informational forms are returned he will reappoint the committees.   He also asked for remarks.

Recording Secretary

            In the absence of Recording Secretary Ernest Gay, Treasurer Charles Ricketts read the November 2018 minutes.  The minutes were approved as read.

            In the absence of Recording Secretary Ernest Gay, Mary Holub wrote down the minutes of the meeting.

Treasurer

            Treasurer Charles Ricketts gave the report on the Association’s financial accounts.  He said that the records were always available for inspection by the members.  He gave the records to Mrs. Baer for auditing. 

Corresponding Secretary – Fire

DEATHS:

            Beverly Joan Ahrens, widow of San Antonio Firefighter Charles E. Ahrens, passed away on November 22, 2018 at the age of 84.  Beverly served in the Navy for two years.  After her service in the Navy she moved to San Antonio in 1952.  Beverly was a cancer survivor.  She was committed to home and family.  Being a wife and mother was always her top priority.  A Sympathy Card was sent to Beverly’s Family on behalf of the SAFPPA.

            Captain Marvin R. Siebert passed away on December 1, 2018 at the age of 93.  Marvin served in the San Antonio Fire Department for 42 years.  Marvin is survived by his loving wife, Suellen Siebert.  They were married for 30 years.  Marvin is also survived by his sons, daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A Sympathy Card was sent to Marvin’s Family on behalf of the SAFPPA.

            Rosalinda Centeno Cavazos, widow of Retired Fire Fighter David Cavazos, pass away on December 17, 2018. As a beautician, Rosie, volunteered every week to cut and set the hair for the elderly.  She also fed the homeless and gathered clothes and materials for the battered women’s shelter.  A Sympathy Card was sent to the Family of Rosie on behalf of the SAFPPA.

ILLNESS:

            Get well cards were sent to Retired Fire Fighter Eddie Lozano on behalf of SAFPPA.

Corresponding Secretary – Police

DEATHS:  

            Mrs. Lillie Renken, wife of Retired Police Officer David Renken, passed away on November 13, 2018. Lillie and David were married for 57 years. A Sympathy Card was sent to the Family of Lillie on behalf of SAFPPA.

            Mr. Louie Mendiola, (Big Louie) passed away on November 17, 2019.  Mr. Mendiola was a true friend to Law enforcement.  A Sympathy Card was given to Armando Ynostrosa to be given to the Family of Louie on behalf of the SAFPPA.

            Retired Police Officer Morris Tomlinson passed away on December 18, 2018 at the age of 70.  A sympathy card was sent to the family of Morris on behalf of SAFPPA.

            Ernestine Bruner, wife of Retired Police Officer Ron Bruner, passed away on December 24, 2018 at the age of 63.  A sympathy card was sent to Ernestine’s family on behalf of SAFPPA.

ILLNESS:

            Please keep in your prayers, Ret Police Officer Stanley L Mory. Stanley checked in to the VA Hospital Dec 10th, 2018 with kidney failure. I will follow up on his condition. A get well card was sent to him on our behalf.

            Please continue to Pray for Retired Police Officer Rick Garr.  The past few months Rick has been waiting for a heart so he could undergo a heart transplant.  Rick finally got his heart and everything seems to be going well.  He still needs our prayers.  A get well card will be sent to Rick on behalf of SAFPPA. 

            We ask for your prayers for Retired Police Officer George Sefcik.  On November 7th George went to the hospital with a broken hip.  He is now recovering from that injury.  George’s wife was also seriously ill.  Both George and his wife are also grieving the death of their son.  No other information was available.  A get well card was sent to George and his family on behalf of SAFPPA.

            Please keep Retired Police Officer Rueben Hernandez in your prayers.  He was in class SAPD ‘77A.  He is receiving treatment at the VA Hospital.  A get well card was sent to Rueben on behalf of SAFPPA.

Pension Fund Committee

            Trustee Larry Reed reported for the Pension Fund.  He reported that he had been elected Treasurer for TEXPERS.  TEXPERS also has a newly elected Executive Secretary. 

            Trustee Reed reported that the Pension Fund assets were $3.6 billion.  The COLA for 11 months was at 1.9 percent. There are no significant legislative changes that will be presented; however, a legislative initiative is going forward.

            The Pension Fund office is being expanded; work is ongoing at this time.  The next Pension Fund planning meeting is on February 5th.  The next Pension Fund Board meeting will be on January 30. 

            Trustee Reed introduced his wife who was attending the meeting.     

Pre-Funded Health Insurance Committee

            Trustee Henry Trevino and Trustee Alex Perez were both present for the meeting.  Trustee Trevino reported that the assets of the Health fund were $376,987,567.98.

PAC Fund Committee/ Endorsement Committee

            PAC treasurer Don Wagoner was not present at the meeting.   President Trainer reported for the PAC Fund. 

DOOR PRIZES

            Winners were: Ray Martinez, Frances Perez, Hope Teran, Jerry Whitley, James Baer, and Jim Shipman.

ADJOURNMENT

            After the door prizes were given, President Trainer adjourned the meeting without opposition.
