Retired members of the San Antonio Fire Department are eligible for various honors that may be requested by your family should you desire them. These honors include:

  • Casket Watch on the day of the funeral or memorial service.
  • Pallbearers.
  • Antique fire truck in lieu the funeral home hearse (subject to availability)
  • Final Alarm Bell Ceremony and Final Salute.
  • Presence of a frontline Fire Company and Apparatus (subject to operational requirements)
  • Assistance requesting a Bagpiper and/or Bugler, however musicians of this type are extremely limited.

The SAFD and IAFF Local 624 do NOT furnish a casket flag or present a flag to the next of kin, however the Honor Guard may assist with flag folding for members who are also documented military veterans.  Likewise, the member’s badge number will not be retired.

Your family or the funeral home may contact the Honor Guard to have them assist in arranging for these honors. Understand that each one is done on a voluntary basis and dependent on available manpower.

Please be sure your family is aware of these honors so that your service to the San Antonio Fire Department and the City of San Antonio will be recognized.
