Letter from Fire and Police Health Fund Representative Henry Trevino

TO ALL RETIREES AND FUTURE MEMBERS OF THE FIRE AND POLICE HEALTH FUND.

                                                                          JULY 1, 2023

I have enjoyed doing exercise all my life. The most enjoyable has always been running. All the other exercises are enjoyable, but not like my running. I started concentrating on running when I was about 25 years of age.   To me, running was the most essential part of my exercise. I did other types of exercise; however, running was my passion.

I got to the point of running 10 to 15 miles a day. Running helped me get through the awful days when my wife passed away. I became addicted to running; I could not pass the day without doing a good run.

I was reading an article in AARP Bulletin that started with: THINK ON YOUR FEET. The article continued, “to help improve your brain’s health, lace up your sneakers and hit the road.”

Walking will help you grow new brain cells. It will also help to facilitate the growth of new neurons. Walking increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the brain. The brain uses about three times as much oxygen for healthy neuron function as muscles do.

A Stanford University study found “creative output increased 60 percent when participants walked, even on a treadmill facing a blank wall. A study found that participants who walked more than 4000 steps daily had healthier brain tissue in the area responsible for memory, learning, and cognitive function than those who did not.

The brain begins to shrink in late adulthood, leading to impaired memory and an increased risk of dementia. The research reveals that aerobic exercise increases the size of the hippocampus, which is part of the human brain.

Furthermore, repeated exposure to stressful situations impairs memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. Walking in nature has been shown to be particularly effective at reducing stress levels.

One of the worst things you can do to your body is to sit on your home sofa and watch T.V. for hours. Your body demands movement; every part of your body has a job to do. Physical activity is extremely necessary for the human body to function to keep the body alive.

I advise you to stay active from the moment you get up in the morning. Drink water and eat small amounts of food throughout the day. If you do not have anything physical to do, write a book. Let your family know some of what you have done since you were a small child.   An autobiography would be an interesting thing to leave after your passing.

There are several senior centers where you can have something to do all day long. Anybody 60 years of age is welcome to come to one of the senior centers. There is no charge to become a member of one of the centers.

Some of the items that are available at the centers are; computer lessons, weights, treadmills, pool tables, ping pong tables, stationary bicycles, all types of physical dancing, an oval lane inside the building that you can walk around, volleyball, a nurse to check your blood pressure and check your sugar level.

After your workout, they provide a lunch meal; also, if you live within 5 miles from a center, a bus will bring you to the center.

You do not have to have heavy workouts. Exercise at your pace. You will have the opportunity to meet many people and enjoy conversations. Try it once and see if you like it. There is no charge for the whole service. You can call this number and ask where these centers are located. (210) 207-7172.

RESENTMENT IS A PRISON.  PEACE OF MIND WILL ONLY COME WITH FORGIVENESS RATHER THAN BEING THE JUDGE.

Moral of the story:  Resentment is the epitomy of hatred, bitterness, anger and the feeling of smothering and oppression.  There is no medication on earth that will cure the resentment one has for another person.  The cure is within the person holding the grudge.  Forgiving is the only cure that will relieve a person from the oppression held within.  Forgiving is the only medication that does not cost you a cent.  One must stop being the judge to be able to live a life of freedom from hate.

SAFPPA Recognizes Earnest and Diana Gay at 6/13 Meeting for Years of Service

In case you missed it, the SAFPPA extended well-earned recognition to Earnest and Diana Gay for their years of service to the San Antonio Fire and Police Pensioners’ Assocation at the June 13 member meeting.

“They were completely surprised,” said Charlie Ricketts, the SAFPPA Treasurer.

SAFPPA President Michael Trainer presented plaques to the couple.

Mr. Gay served as the organization’s recording secretary from 2008-2022 and played extensive role in organizing elections and the yearly steak luncheon.

Mr. Gay’s plaque read: “The San Antonio Fire and Police Pensioners’ Association wishes to extend our sincere thanks in appreciation of your dedication and service to our association. Best wishes and good luck on retirement.”

Mrs. Gay prepared many meals for member meetings and assisted the organization in innumerable ways over the years. Mrs. Gay’s plaque said, “Thank you for all you have done. Your love and care for all our members is much appreciated. We will always be thankful for the meals you prepared, the work you did on the luncheons and the many other unseen touches you have added. Your gift of hospitality has been on fully display.”

Health Fund Board Member and Retired SAFD Member Henry Trevino Offers Thoughts on Wills and Estates

TO ALL RETIREES AND FUTURE MEMBERS OF THE FIRE AND POLICE HEALTH FUND.

JUNE 1, 2023

This report is the continuance of the May report, which dealt with Wills and Estates. At that time, we discussed the necessity to protect a person’s assets that will eventually pass or have passed into the realm of God.

Besides having a Will, we need to have some other instruments that are necessary to protect the assets and make it easy for the loved ones we leave behind.

The instruments that I mentioned to complete the Will and other arrangements at the time of passing are as follows:

1. Statute durable power of attorney
2. A medical power of attorney
3. Directive to Physicians
4. Directive for disposition of remains
5. Declaration of guardian in the event of incapacity

If you do not have a Will, you do not have an Executor or an Executrix to distribute the dictates of a Will, and you do not know what to do, you should seek help from an Estate Attorney.

I want to repeat that I am not an Attorney, a CPA, or an Estate Planning Guide. I sincerely suggest that you consult with an Attorney to complete a Will. “Group Legal Services.” at (210) 822-7678 specializes in working with Fire Fighters and Police Officers. They are very good people and will take good care of providing any information you may need.

Appointing an Executor or an Executrix is vitally important. An Executor or an Executrix of an estate is responsible for ensuring that the property and assets are distributed in accordance with a person’s Will. An Executor or an Executrix must gather all the decedent’s assets, and all the debts of the decedent. Nothing should be distributed until all the initial assets, including debts and chattel items, have been accounted for.

I do not want to get overly technical about what the duties of Executors or executrices are; it is best to get the assistance of an attorney. I will mention one essential qualification of an Executor’s or an Executrix’s control of the distribution of a Will. An Executor or an Executrix can override a Beneficiary. If you act in the estate’s best interest and as the Will dictates, an Executor or Executrix can override a Beneficiary.

This will probably be the last report I will write about Wills and Estates. However, I have gathered some vital and detailed information that I can send to you if you wish. The report will give you an idea of what steps you should take to prepare for dealing with a death.

In addition, this information could help a loved one prepare their paperwork before death. Finally, there are a lot of telephone numbers in the report that Fire Fighters can call to get immediate assistance. The Police Officers must contact the Police Chief’s office to get help.

I will gladly send you this information if you wish. It is free; there is absolutely no charge. You can send me your email, or you can call me on the telephone. (210)-710-7378. My email is; htre2003@aol.com

NO GOOD IS EVER DONE IN THE WORLD BY HESITATION.
(Thomas Huxley)

Moral of the story: “Errrrrrr” means I do not know what to do. Hesitation is an evil that immediately makes you wrong. Do not dwell on deciding; it is either “yes” or “no;” or “right or wrong.” If you are wrong, at least you do not have the lingering thought of, “What if I was right.” On the other hand, if you are right, you can pat yourself on the back and say to yourself, “I knew I was right all time.”
